• Poor demand
•  Steady prices
• We expect a stable price level and recommend purchasing the quantities required up to the next quarter

Walnut Kernels Moldova / Chile:

• Moldova: mostly sold out / raw material hardly available
• Chile: We expect a this year’s crop yield of about 90.000 mt. So this is on previous year’s level. Start of the harvest is anticipated for March.

Which country does harvest their seeds and kernels at what time?

Mineral oil residues in food have been the topic of discussion between the food industry, various institutions and prospective authorities, as well as political representatives for some time now. Due to the increasing media presence and increased reporting, this topic “MOSH & MOAH” is gaining in importance in public perception.

The short forms MOSH (Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons) and MOAH (Mineral Pol Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are chemical compounds in mineral oils. According to an assessment of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), MOAH are suspected of causing genetic modification and cancer. The accumulation in organs and their damage, however, is attributed to MOSH.

The packaging of recycled paper has now been identified as a major source of contamination. These often contain mineral oil residues in form of printing colour. Especially oil or fat foods, such as seeds or nuts, tend to have a strong absorption. However, the migration of mineral oil residues to the product can be significantly slowed down/ reduced by using suitable packaging.

According to the statement of the European Commission dated 16.01.17 which addressed the member states, these health threats are also widely recognised. Contrary to the expectations of some organisations, there were no recommendations on specific measures given. It is up to the member states of the EU to push the active participation of the food producers forward. Thus, the results can be forwarded to Brussels until February 2019. A monitoring of the MOSH & MOAH values in food is important and these tests would help to understand them better.

One has to await the realisation and related measures of the individual member states. It is uncertain how the “active involvement of food companies” is interpreted. However, it is already clear that some organisations will not be content with the commission’s opinion. Specific protective measures for the consumers as well as an introduction of binding limit values were already requested.

The topic “salmonellae in Indian sesame seed“ is still extremely acute. Every fifth container in the EU is already being held back by the customs to be salmonellae tested again. Depending on the port of arrival the customs clearance may take up to five weeks. The costs may amount to several thousand Euros. If no salmonellae are found, the sesame is released for importation. In case of the evidence of salmonellae, there are two options: Either the goods are being sent back to their country of origin or the products are being destroyed completely. In both cases the costs are significant.

In addition, as from 23.02.2017 a regulation will come into force which includes that each delivered container shall be accompanied by the results of sampling and analysis of salmonellae and by a health certificate. These documents are to be issued by the exporter of the country of origin and have to be attached to the shipment. Arriving sesame seed containers without the relevant documents cannot be imported.

During the last 6 months the price Level for sunflower kernels has increased by 6 percent. This is due to the farmers in the countries of origin. Because of the low prices at the beginning of the new crop farmers are not willing to put further quantities on the market at those low Prices.

According to various market participants a large quantity of raw material is being held back to make the prices go up. Furthermore, the increasing demand on the market for oil and hulled kernels encourages the farmers to benefit more from the market price developments.

We expect further continuous price increases until the beginning of the next harvest in September 2017 and recommend covering your remaining demands.

As already reported, the yield of walnut kernels – especially for light  kernels – in Eastern Europe is, compared to last years crop, due to unfavorable weather conditions considerably lower than assumed. Consequently a higher availability of light-amber-fractions was given; however, the whole crop amount was rated below average.

Until the end of 2016 the price level for walnut kernels out of Eastern Europe was still stable and moderate. Despite upcoming shortages on the raw material market, bigger units could have been traded without any problems. The limited volumes of organic kernels were almost sold out at this stage of the season.

Since the beginning of 2017 the situation on the raw material market has become worse. Further light kernels are barely on the market, light amber quality is rather rarely to find. This has led to a price increase of about 10 % since the beginning of 2017 and this tendency is expected to continue.

Producers in Eastern Europe do not assume a relief of the raw material markets. Therefore this years’ walnut season will soon come to an end – earlier than usual. We urgently recommend covering your demand now!

In the last three days Sesame prices in India went up by about 3 %. The main reason for this are increasing prices in Africa (about + 6 %). Until the end of November 2016 China imported about 890,000 MT of sesame seed, of which 860,000 MT were imported from Africa. We assume that the price level in India will still rise in the upcoming days.

According to IOPEPC the total crop volume in India amounts to 370,000 MT including a backlog of about 70,000 MT out of the old crop. About 200,000 MT to 250,000 MT of this volume are still available on the market. Meanwhile, India has imported additional 50,000 MT from Africa.

Due to this rising price level for sesame seed, we do expect a rising demand on the buyers side in the short term.

We recommend covering your demand for the first quarter of 2017 now!

Together with our Chinese producer for pumpkin kernels we brought our production of pumpkin kernels, also Shine Skin Kernels, to a new level of quality. From now on we produce Chinese kernels with a purity of 99,98 % as standard.

Our pumpkin kernels now go through five high-tech Color Sorters and two X-Ray machines. On this highest level of quality, we assure a product 100 % free of stones, glass and plastic.

Our aim is it to offer only the best quality with best prices. For this reason we make a difference in the color grade of our Shine Skin kernels. You will surely find a suiting product for your needs!

Market Update:

The current price level is about 50 % below previous year’s level. A huge part of importers for pumpkin kernels have still pricy kernels out of the old crop on stock. Because of this situation the demand for pumpkin kernels is rather low.

Due to Chinese New Year, which will be in week 4 of 2017, the demand for pumpkin kernels in the origin itself is rising more and more. About 80 % of all Chinese factories which do mainly produce roasted Shine Skin Kernels for the domestic market do continually buy raw material. For this reason we assume that the price level for the beginning of next year will be quite steady.

Our request therefore is to buy according to the market situation.
